Fender Relic: Do You Need One

A Fender Relic is a guitar that has been deliberately fashioned like the original guitars musicians used during the 1950's and 1960's. They look aged and worn and it is difficult to tell that they are not the originals! Both Gibson and Fender make Relic guitars.

Even though there are actually really good reasons for making Fender Relics, some music enthusiasts feel that they should only be owned by people who actually did play an old Telecaster or Strat guitar. Other people are confused as to why anyone would ever want to buy a guitar that arrives already beat up and worn.

The first request for these types of guitars to be made came from those musicians who owned some of the original early Fenders. The earlier Fenders are now worth thousands of dollars; the musicians wanted something that looked just the same so that no one would be able to tell the difference between their original Fender and the Fender Relic.

Fenders have always been great guitars, however with time the originals played by the guitar greats were worth thousands of dollars. Musicians, loathe to lose their original Stratocaster or have it stolen while they were on tour, instead requested that the Relics be made. In fact, several musicians did have their very expensive guitars stolen while they were on tour! With a Relic, they could then their original guitar at home, and tour with that instead.

The relic guitars had to be well made and sound as good as the originals so that those listening would not be able to tell the difference. Because of this, they became very popular in their own right as they remain today. You can hook up a Relic to a Fender Frontman 212r and to most people it is impossible to tell the difference between the original guitar and the Relic; they sound the same.
